My name is Debora, I’m 44 years young (we’re just getting started, right?) and I'm a Leadership Coach. I was four when I started to watch out for my younger sisters. Since that time it was the most natural thing for me to take responsibility - leading a dance group, leading girls camps, becoming a consultant, becoming Head of HR, being part of a leadership team of an NGO that went through a major change process, becoming a mum of two (at the core that’s leadership as well) and finally becoming a professional Leadership Coach.
Through all these years, I’ve always wanted to do an incredible job in those roles. I had strong ideas in my mind of how a good leader looks like and tried to follow those pictures to the best of my abilities. To be honest, it was draining and incredibly lonely. I believed that I somehow needed to be perfect as a leader. I always felt that there are so many rules for a good leader and it’s best to follow them as closely as possible.
It took me about 30 years to slowly wake up from this and realise: This whole thing is not about being perfect and following rules. That’s a lie!!! Leadership is actually about being yourself. Serving your people with the beautiful talents and strengths that you carry inside of you. That’s when you will do your most effective work as a leader without running into burnout - or not stepping into Leadership at all like so many others.
